GARBAGE DISPOSAL INSTRUCTIONS
To control the rat population and avoid being ticketed / fined by the NYC Dept. of Sanitation or the NYC Dept. of Health, it is very important that building owners and tenants follow the disposal rules below.

Special Materials Handling Instructions
To dispose of small amounts of latex or oil base paint, place newspaper, paper towels or kitty litter into the paint can. Do not replace the lid. Once dry, dispose of the dried paint with your household garbage. Place the empty cans in a clear plastic bag and dispose at the next recycling pickup.
Completely empty spray paint cans may be recycled along with your other metal recyclables.

Paint Products
Propane Tanks, Hazardous Materials, Gas Canisters

Exchange propane tanks and / or gas canisters at the same location where you made your purchase.
The Department of Sanitation’s SAFE (Solvents, Automotive, Flammables, Electronics) Program is suspended until the Fall of 2021. Please either hold on to your hazardous material until the SAFE program re-opens or contact a local waste management company.
Medical Waste

HOUSEHOLD: Place used syringes and / or lancets in a sharps container and dispose of on our regular garbage pick-up day.

PROFESSIONAL: All medical professionals, including but not limited to; Medical Doctors, Dentists, Podiatrists, Ophthalmologists, Veterinarians, or any other profession that produces medical waste of any kind must have a contract with a licensed medical waste disposal company.
Professional medical waste must never be placed in the driveway.
Construction Debris

Before embarking on a home renovation project, we recommend that you discuss debris removal with your contractor. The Department of Sanitation does not provide for construction debris removal. Residents may want to ask their contractor to remove the debris for them or they may make arrangements with a private waste management company.
Appliances

Refrigerators, ovens, and other appliances to be discarded are picked up by sanitation on Wednesdays. All doors must be removed prior to being placed in the driveway. Please first call 311 to have sanitation come and remove the freon tank from refrigerators

Snow Removal
The Association typically plows the driveways when 3” or more of snow has fallen from any one storm. The plow will get as close as possible to your garage door. You may still have to shovel away some of the snow between the cleared path and your garage door.
Please DO NOT LEAVE vehicles parked in the alleyway during a snowstorm as they might get plowed in or prevent the plow from getting through.
Please remove all garbage and recycling materials out of the driveway until the snow has been properly cleared from the driveway. Wait until there is a clear plow path with room for passage of garbage trucks before leaving garbage and recycling materials for collection. In case of heavy snowfall, Sanitation may miss two or more garbage pick-ups in the driveways
Building owners or their tenants are responsible for shoveling the sidewalk in front of their building. The city does ticket for unshoveled sidewalks - see the City snow removal guidelines below.

Please be a good neighbor and assist elderly homeowners or those with health issues with their snow-shoveling needs.

Regarding the driveway between 139th & 140th Street: Please keep all vehicles off the north side of the alleyway as the plow will be pushing the snow off in that direction

SOUTHSIDE of 139th St.: NO PARKING on TUESDAYS and FRIDAYS between 11:30AM and 1:00pm

Alleyway Dos and Don'ts
No vehicles should park at the driveways’ entrances (on 7th and 8th Ave) in such a manner that vehicles are unable to enter the alleyways. This will result in ticketing (by NYPD or Sanitation) and towing

No vehicle shall park in the driveway in such a manner that it blocks passage by other vehicles or Sanitation Trucks. This may result in towing

No vehicles should be parked on other owner's property without expressed permission from the owner. This may result in towing
​
Parking directly in front of another person’s garage may result in ticketing by NYPD and towing.

Regarding the driveway between 139th & 140th Street: any vehicle parked on the far north-side of the driveway can be towed at any point since both fire escapes and emergency exits are located directly behind the buildings on the south-side of 140th Street. The towing will be done legally by means of a private property towing contract with Five J’s Towing and done under the guidance of NYPD

Security
Make sure your home’s windows and doors are locked at all times

Close shades/curtains on first floor windows and doors to shield items within your home from prying eyes
If you have a security system, place it on the “Stay” setting when at home
​
If your home has a garage, be aware that a closed garage door is not necessarily a locked garage door. There are electronic garage door locks that can work in conjunction with your garage door opener
​
If you are a building owner, make sure all building entrances are well lit with either timed or motion sensing lights
​
Well-placed security cameras can assist police in the event of a crime
​
If you own a car, make sure your vehicle’s doors are locked and that all valuables are removed. Never leave items such as shopping bags, phone chargers, sun glasses, pocket change, etc. in your vehicle
​
Refrain from wearing headphones or earbuds when out walking or on subways, especially at night
Be keenly aware of your surroundings at all times when outdoors - especially in the evening
Have your metro card in hand prior to entering a subway station. Have keys in your hand prior to getting to your door
If possible, schedule package deliveries on days you will be at home. Both UPS and FedEx have a “choose your delivery date” feature for customers with online accounts. In some cases, you can choose delivery to a UPS or FedEx retail location

311 & 911 TIPS

911 is for emergency access to police, fire or urgent medical matters (ambulance)
311 is for non emergency calls to police (such as noise complaints) as well as for a means of obtaining answers to city related services
Please note: it is always best to call 911 from a landline phone as the operator automatically has access to your address
If calling 311 or 911 from a cell phone make sure your cell phone’s "WiFi Call Assist" is turned off. Some cell phone’s WiFi Call Assist may hinder 311 and 911 calls from being connected

For immediate mental health needs call 1-888-NYC-WELL (24 hours a day)

LETTERS OF SUPPORT
We always try to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our neighbors when it comes to dealing with city and state agencies. One of the best ways that we’ve found to assist our block’s residents in matters pertaining to city and state agencies is with Letters of Support.
These letters from our organization are often required when one is looking to obtain Landmarks approval or D.O.B. permits when doing work on one’s property. However, they may also be needed if a resident feels they are being unjustly fined by such agencies as Sanitation or the Health Department.
